NECA Eastern Region '09

Rome - Daily Optional Tours

Dear NECA Travelers - The following are private tours customized for our attendees, families and friends. Our local guides will come to the Westin whereupon once aboard our buses we'll learn about the art, culture and history of Rome. The tour costs include tips to the drivers and guides. Advance registration is really the only way we can guarantee you a place on the tours.

March 30, Monday
9:00am-1:15pm   Vatican & St. Peter's Within the small, independent state of the Vatican City, there is an exceptional collection of artworks collected by the Popes over centuries. Over one thousand rooms and galleries are known collectively as the Vatican Museums. We'll visit the fascinating Candelabra Gallery, the Gallery of Tapestries designed by the School of Raphael, the Gallery of Geographical Map, the Rooms of Raphael and, the impressive Sistine Chapel, built in the 15th century as a private chapel for the Popes; here you'll marvel at Michelangelo's masterpieces such as the frescoed ceiling and the Last Judgment.
  • Our tour concludes in the majestic Basilica of St. Peter's, the most impressive and largest church in the world: It stands on the site of Nero's circus, over St. Peter's tomb and the spot where he was martyred. Its interior is stunning; the first chapel in the south aisle contains the famous white marble Pietà carved by Michelangelo at the age of twenty-five, a work of striking strength and simplicity.
  • 9:00am-1:15pm   Imperial Rome to see the Coliseum, Rome's ancient amphitheater built by Emperor Vespasian. Next is the Roman Forum, the political and commercial center where Marc Anthony, Cicero, Sepustus, Trojan and Nero stood. At the Basilica of St. Peter's in Chains, we see another Michelangelo masterpiece, the statue of Moses.

    March 31, Tuesday
2:00pm-6:15pm   Repeat of Imperial Rome tour.
    2:00pm - 6:15pm   Repeat of Vatican & St. Peter's tour.

    April 1, Wednesday

8:00am-Noon   Papal Audience (where he addresses a crowd from around the world) happens Wednesday mornings (depending on his schedule) in St. Paul's Square. This cannot be combined with a Vatican tour. ATA would arrange a coach transfer from the hotel. Please let ATA know of the Reservation Form if you wish your name/s to be included in the lottery, which is done 2 months prior. Note: The cost is for round-trip transportation by coach and a local guide to lead you into and out of the Square.
2:00pm-6:00pm   Renaissance Rome This tour visits many of Rome's famous sites beginning with Trevi Fountain where tradition requires a coin toss to insure your return to Rome. The Pantheon was a technical advancement for it's time and inspired Michelangelo's dome of St. Peter's Basilica. And, no tour of Rome is complete without visiting one of it's marvelous squares, in this case Piazza Navona.
2:00pm-6:00pm   Catacombs and Old Appian Way tour takes us to Rome's outskirts to the Basilica of St. Paul's outside the Wall, the largest cathedral after Rome's St. Peter's and built on the site of St. Paul's tomb and where we can admire the cloister. We then see the Catacombs where the early Christians worshiped in secret and buried their dead. Our return drive is along a portion of Rome's first military road laid out in 312 B.C., the Old Appian Way.
    April 2, Thursday
10:30am-1:30pm   Site Visit - Depart the hotel for a meeting with local contractors and visits to active construction sites. While at the job sites, we'll discuss training, materials, bidding and codes with the electricians. Note: The site visit is included in the registration package.
9:00am-Noon   The Vatican Gardens have been a place of quiet and meditation for the Popes ever since 1279 when Nicholas III (Giovanni Gaetano Orsini, 1277-1280) moved his residence back to the Vatican from the Lateran Palace. Within the walls, which he had built to protect his residence, he planted an orchard (pomerium), a lawn (pratellum) and a garden (viridarium).

  • The tours are subject to confirmation, plus the Vatican tours are always subject to the Papal schedule. The touring schedule and arrangements wont be finalized until much closer to our arrival in Rome.
  • Tips to the local guides and coach driver are included.
  • Otherwise the days are open to explore Rome on your own. You can shop on the Via Condotti, perhaps Europe's most elegant street, have coffee at an outdoor cafe on the Via Veneto, or you can people-watch from the Spanish Steps while enjoying ice cream
